Lizard Mound: CANCELED
May is Wisconsin Archaeology Month and as part of the celebration, the Wisconsin Historical Society and the Wisconsin Archeological Society are sponsoring a series of events. Hosted by the Cedarburg Library, the public is invited to a presentation on Lizard Mound, located in Lizard Mound State Park located four miles northeast of West Bend.
In early 2023, the National Park Service affirmed Lizard Mound’s eligibility to the National Register of Historic Places. Held sacred by Native Americans, what today we call Lizard Mound served as a ceremonial center utilized between 750 and 1200 CE. It is considered one of Wisconsin’s premier examples of sites associated with the Effigy Mound Ceremonial Complex.
Archaeologists Katie Egan-Bruhy and Mark Bruhy, through Wisconsin Historical Society sponsorship, conducted Lizard Mound research and prepared the National Register documentation. Their presentation will include a summary of archaeological research, and anthropological interpretations of how this remarkable location symbolizes pre-European contact ritual activity, social organization, cosmological beliefs, and mortuary practices.
